Scouting Facilities

Mata*Garcia Architects L.L.P., was selected to design the facilities for a proposed 75 acre scout camping site in the Rio Grande Valley.  The property is densely covered with mesquites and contains walking trails, blinds, open-air campsites and a small lake.  While designed for the youth served by the scouting council, the facilities will also be used for adult training.

Camp Lodge: With a seating capacity of 110 campers, the lodge will serve primarily as a dining hall. A full commercial kitchen has direct access to the dining area and a delivery area.  An infirmary is located off of the wrap-around porch  for 24 hour access.  The dining hall can be partitioned into four separate meeting areas through the use of folding wall panels. Glazed roll-up garage doors at each bay allows the hall to be expanded out onto the wrap-around deck during cool weather.  A bowed platform at one end of the hall porch allows for the staging of performances with the audience seated on a sloping, grass-covered berm.  Living quarters for the camp director and a camp storage room are located above the infirmary, kitchen and restroom areas.  Stained siding, exposed concrete columns and metal roofing are the primary materials used for the exterior.  Low maintenance materials are also proposed for the interior in order to maximize outdoor scouting time and limit clean-up time.

Scout Cabins: The two-story cabins can accommodate up to 52 campers or two to four scout groups, each with their own sleeping quarters.  Separate facilities are provided for both youth and adult scouts. A screened-in porch area provides two separate meeting areas for the troops.  An outdoor deck with a central fire pit provides a relaxing night-time retreat.  Butterfly roofs provide for a dramatic look and divert water into a water collection silo.

Camp Pool House: The pool house is an open-air pavilion that will provide locker and shower areas for scouts, adults and visitors.  Adjacent to the 50 meter pool, the facility is clad in corrugated aluminum siding, with exposed concrete masonry block walls and concrete flooring on the interior. A sloping metal roof diverts water into a rain collection silo.
